Research has shown that prolonged exposure of the skin to the sun can be harmful due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV). This can be reduced by suitable clothing, however, the level of protection presented by clothing can vary and is dependent on the fabric properties and the design of the garment. Since April 2018, UV protective clothing has been considered as Category 1 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) under the scope of the EU Regulation for Personal Protective Equipment 2016/425.
